Subject: James (Jimmy) Hamilton
Dear Mr. Cook,
I am writing a history on my local football club Hartlepool United and am anxious to obtain details, date and place of birth and death etc., of Jimmy Hamilton who played for Hartlepools from 1931 to 1933 and later managed them from 1935 to 1941. Most sources state that he was born in Hetton Le Hole either in 1900 or 1903.
My understanding is that he served in the Coldstream Guards towards the end of the First World War and was a brigade boxing champion in the early 1920's. On leaving the Army he played for Crystal Palace F.C. for several seasons before returning to the north-east.
Local sources suggest that he ran a small business, newsagents perhaps, in the Thornaby area to supplement his income from football. After leaving Hartlepools he concentrated on his business and was never actively involved in football again.
Any information you, or your colleagues, may be able to provide on Hamilton would be gratefully received as my publisher, Breedon Books, is anxious to include as much personal data as is practicable.
Many thanks for your assistance in this matter.
Regards,
Malcolm Errington
