Reply with quote | #1 | Gentlemen & Ladies The National Memorial Arboretum, was founded to record those that served and lost their lives in the service of this country. This memorial is being constantly expanded. After a recent visit by our Standard Bearer Geoff Bell, we thought it was only fitting we record a Roll of honour for all Coldstreamers that have died since 1945 while serving in the Regiment, From the end of WW2 to this present time, Coldstreamers have kept the peace in all corners of the world, so many have given the ultimate sacrifice, either in conflict, by accident or by illness while serving. We have formed a permanent Roll of Honour within the site, this to be expanded as the information is revealed. For this we need your help. At the moment we have sections with names and dates, i.e. NI, Aden, Oman, Kenya, Canal Zone etc, we need info on Cyprus, the UK, we will have Iraq and the Balkans on-line soon. This is our tribute, lets make it our aim to honour every Coldstreamer. Mac Finkill http://www.coldstreamguards-boro.org/National%20Memorial.htm

Gentlemen, The completed 'Role of Honour' has now been uploaded the role is compiled but we still have many links to fit in and quite a number of names and details to find. When I started this project I realized it would be a long haul, but never realized how much help and enthusiasm would be generated by all the 'Foot Soldiers,' Thank you Gentlemen and a Big thank you to Bivi for allowing me the time and Bandwidth to carry out this duty and that is what it is Gentlemen, 'A Duty' for us all' 'To remember our Comrades, who passed away serving in our Great Regiment. Reply with quote | #5 | This info has been complied by former long serving RQMS Fred May, who is also a Member of the Bodyguard to the Royal Household. Fred gives one day a week of his retirement to the Archives and has kindly given our research some priority and its a difficult task. He has to find each individual Coldstreamer from our list, trawl through their records, hopefully to trace how, when and where they passed away. Up to press he has found 22, from Italy to Norway. He has also supplied from the ROH Army list, details of Coldstreamers that have died including their No's and DOB, which means I can complete the formal side of their memorial. But from this list I find their is 30 plus names we have not recorded, so Gentlemen we shall need your help again. I will start the updating later today and will post the latest on the Board. On your behalf, I offer our most grateful thanks for his diligence and vary hard work, to Fred May and I owe him a few pints. Best Regards, Mac

Reply with quote | #6 | Gentlemen, A further update has been added to the Roll, details of another 36 Coldstreamers have been included, these are marked with a *Asterisk* on the left. We are now in possession of 'The Army Roll'; from that, we have obtained another 45 Coldstreamers that have died in service since the War. We would ask you to look at this section at the foot of the Roll, look for the years you served and see if names jog the memory. " Message for Keith we found Joe Spoor." We are gradually adding Ages and then Links, its very time consuming. Its taken quite a while Gentlemen, but I think we are slowly getting there, we received excellent comments from RHQ on the building of this memorial. All we ask is this final push to remember and honour our Comrades. Many thanks, Macboro

Reply with quote | #10 | Mac, I was on the Honor guard at the funeral(BMH Monchengladbach) of a Guardsman who was killed in a road accident outside the Barracks at Hubblerath Germany in 1958/59. But for the life of me I cannot remember his name. I have scanned the roll of Honor for BAOR but there does not appear to be any record of his death? A check of Battalion records for that period may bring his death to light.

Reply with quote | #12 | Mac,
I have just chanced across the website that lists past Coldstreamers and can add details of my father CQMS T.E. Witton 2658539 1st Battalion who died on 2nd February 1955. I'd appreciate some details of how I can pass information to you and (if it is possible) would appreciate some assistance to determine the exact circumstances of his death.
My thanks in anticipation of your response
Clive Witton

Dear Clive, Very many thanks for your contact. You will see from the ROH that those in the final section are Coldstreamers who we haven't been able to establish how they died. But now I have a direct cintact with a relative I can apply to RHQ achives for help. These achives are not computorised and have to be manually searched by our only archivist, so quite a long task. I only have your Dad's basic details. He is listed at death as Thomas Ezra Witton. 23658539 C/Sgt ( he would have been acting CQMS) DOB 9.08.1920, /DOD 3.02.1955. I will now send for his records, which will give greater detail, this does take a while and I will keep in touch. Very Best Regards, Mac Finkill Vice President ----- Original Message ----- |
