Most sources state that he was born in Hetton Le Hole either in 1900 or 1903.

My understanding is that he served in the Coldstream Guards towards the end of the First World War and was a brigade boxing champion in the early 1920's. On leaving the Army he played for Crystal Palace F.C. for several seasons before returning to the north-east.

Local sources suggest that he ran a small business, newsagents perhaps, in the Thornaby area to supplement his income from football. After leaving Hartlepools he concentrated on his business and was never actively involved in football again.

Any information you, or your colleagues, may be able to provide on Hamilton would be gratefully received as my publisher, Breedon Books, is anxious to include as much personal data as is practicable.

Many thanks for your assistance in this matter.

Regards,

Malcolm Errington

Supporting the Coldstream Guards in Afghanistan ..

Gents, Ladies, and Coldstream followers:

Over the last couple of weeks I have been racking my brains to try and get something done that can help support the Coldstream Guards during their Tour of Afghanistan.

Leaving the Regiment in only a few weeks and watching all my friends and fellow Coldstreamers deploy has seen many mixed feelings come my way. To be honest, a few months ago I thought that it would be relief that would be the emotion that took over but that was far from the truth, as Coldstreamers are all forged from Cast Iron Moulds and to trying to explain those feelings to others who could not compare experiences would not (I am afraid to say) have the same effect.

I tell you this as I want you all to know how much passion I put into projects such as these. They are planned meticulously to ensure that the vision is equalled, if not superseded by the solution.

I have come up with three projects that all of you, some of you or even none of you may be interested in. If you arent interested I only ask can you please pass on these details to others that may be interested that, in itself, will be enough.

All of these projects will allow everyone to taking part to take something away, but still directly help with the appeal to help Coldstreamers Serving in Afghanistan.

Firstly, I am proud to announce the 2010 Coldstream Guards (support in Afghanistan) CD Calendar. It has taken over 3 weeks to design and should appeal to everyone not only Coldstreamers, with amazing images and Coldstream Trivia.

Secondly, is a simple clock that has been customised with a face that will promote the wristband appeal plus it keeps very good time!

And last, but not least will be the Coldstream Guards Op Herrick 11 Commemorative Capstar. This will be produced on completion of the Battalions Tour of Afghanistan and will allow YOU to get your name on a piece of Coldstream History. I am very excited about this project, and details will follow very, very soon!

More details on these projects are available at: http://www.shinycapstar.com/opherrick11supportpage.htm

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY by taking part in any of these projects, you are directly *helping support the Coldstream Guards in Afghanistan.

*Profit from the sale of these items will be donated to the wristband appeal fund and also used to develop other items that will be sold to promote the wristbands appeal fund.

Thank you.

Adam

The Repatriation ......

Gents, ladies & guests.

There has been much talk and speculation regarding the repatriation of Service Personnel through Wootton Bassett. I have had hundreds of e-mails through ShinyCapstar asking me to confirm details and clarify remarks made on various websites on the World Wide Web.

Whilst I dont promise to be an expert in this subject, I have spoken to various individuals and organisations that do have knowledge in this area. This information has been sourced, extracted and replicated so all can be aware of the details for these events.

The History of Wootten Bassett:
The town of Wootten Bassett is within close proximity to Junction 16 of the M4, allowing easy access to other towns and cities including London. For the last two years, the people of Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, have stopped to pay their respects to soldiers being repatriated to RAF Lyneham and driven through their town en route to the mortuary at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

In 2007 repairs to the runway at RAF Brize Norton meant that soldiers were flown into nearby RAF Lyneham instead, and Wootton Bassett High Street, and the new war memorial, were suddenly on the route that the hearses took to the mortuary. Three members of the local branch of the Royal British Legion happened to see a flag-draped coffin passing through, and asked the airbase to notify them in advance in future. On one occasion, the repatriation coincided with bellringing practice in St Bartholomews and All Saints Church, and the ringers tolled for the dead, so starting another tradition.

There has been a huge media interest and what started as a small town showing their respects to service personnel has now turned into a logistical nightmare for the emergency services of how an atmosphere of dignified respect could be maintained. The town has now become a focus for a national upsurge of public support for the forces and public grief.

The Repatriation:

There has been much discussion about attending a repatriation of a Serviceman killed in action as they move through Wootton Bassett from RAF Lyneham. These events have risen in high profile and Servicemen from Regiments and Corps of the casualties have attended to pay their respects in many occasions. Hopefully the following information should confirm or clarify questions that may be raised.

As a Regiment we wholeheartedly admire the people of Wootton Bassett and have a high regard for what they do on repatriations. The repatriation is, and always will be, generated by the local community and townsfolk of Wootton Bassett who welcome servicemen with open arms. With this in mind, we should all be thoughtful, and respect that the local community has primacy on these events.

Household Division personnel are advised that may attend if they wish in Combats, Number 2 Dress or civilian clothes but if in uniform, they should avoid taking up prime positions which include the road edge. Home Service Clothing should not be worn at such events. Serving Personnel are also reminded that they should gather in small groups and stand to attention (saluting if in uniform) when the cortege passes. Service Personnel are also reminded that they are not to clap when the cortege passes.

All are advised that this is not a military parade and therefore it would be very insensitive to the locals if hordes of serving soldiers arrived and started to form up in threes, as per an official parade. The funeral and other commemorative services are the time and place for such military activities.

Association members may attend if they wish to do so but they should please respect that no formal duties are required from ex-members, as this is not a formal parade. The Regiment also fully supports the attendance of those attending this event.

The Regiment will ensure that they make every effort to allow Serving Soldiers to attend, but all should be aware that this may not always be the case due to other commitments that may not have been publicised. All should also note that the body is repatriated by members of the regiment at RAF Lyneham.

We should all remember that the local community has primacy during the Repatriation at Wootten Bassett. Every effort will be made to disseminate information regarding funerals and commemorative services, to enable all to be informed.

Finally, our grief is a Regimental and National emotion but we do not need to be present in Wootten Bassett to express it.
In the same vein Wootten Bassett welcomes everyone wishing to pay their respects.

N.B There will no doubt be questions regarding this subject. As previously mentioned I post this message after trying to source and gather as much information as possible to make everyone aware. Should anyone have any further questions please forward them to me and I will endeavour to get an answer as soon as possible. As always, debates are healthy and I know that this subject will be very close to many (including myself).

I post this information to help, aid and inform people, and not to entice others into an argument.
